Drivers have been warned to expect a series of lane closures on the M25 while work on the junction at Brentwood takes place.

National Highways is changing the layout of junction 28, which connects the motorway to the A12, as drivers regularly face traffic jams and delays.

In recent years, up to 7,500 vehicles have passed through the junction’s roundabout at peak times, and this number is expected to rise by 30 per cent over the next 12 years.

To reduce jams, a new two-lane loop road is being built to carry traffic travelling from the M25 anti-clockwise carriageway onto the A12 eastbound towards Brentwood.

Work includes building new bridges to take the loop road over or under the other road links, and the Weald Brook.

National Highways expects the project to be finished this summer but has warned drivers to expect a series of closures in the coming weeks.

These closures will allow their contractors to connect the new loop road to the motorway.

One lane has been shut on the anti-clockwise carriageway during the day since Monday (July 14), and this will continue until next Sunday (July 27).

Motorists are also prevented from driving in this direction between junction 29 and junction 28 from 10pm to 5.30am.

During the nightly closures, a diversion route will be in place via the A127, A1245, A130, and A12, with drivers re-joining the M25 at junction 28.

Due to other works next week, between July 21 and July 24, an alternative diversion via the M25 at junction 30 using the A13, A406, M11 and re-joining the M25 at junction 27, will be in place.

National Highways says that Ultra-Low Emission Zone (Ulez) cameras will not be in operation along the signed diversion routes.

Their works will also involve changing the position of the A12 eastbound exit slip road and M25 anti-clockwise entry slip road to accommodate the new loop road.

The M25 anti-clockwise carriageway will eventually be widened to provide more space for traffic leaving for the A12 eastbound.
